Say goodbye to dictionaries? Learning English (vocabulary) with AI Chatbots Prof. Robert Lew (Faculty of English, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan)

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has affected many domains, including lexicography and language learning. In this talk, I will explore how AI can help lexicographers in their work, such as writing definitions and creating examples. I will also look at how dictionary users – people who need help when reading, writing, or translation – might benefit from AI tools and whether these tools could supplant traditional dictionaries. Finally, I tackle the often-heard claim that, while using AI can help us do the task at hand, we won’t learn anything this way and will perhaps ultimately be reduced to the lazy dummies as depicted in Disney’s Wall-E.

Prof. dr hab. Robert Lew:
Professor at the Faculty of English at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. His interests centre around dictionary use, and he has been involved in a number of research projects in access-facilitating devices, definition formats, dictionaries for production, writing assistants, digital dictionary interfaces, training in dictionary skills, and most recently AI in lexicography. Currently editor of the International Journal of Lexicography (Oxford University Press), worked as a practical lexicographer for various publishers, including Harper-Collins, Pearson-Longman, and Cambridge University Press.

Unlocking knowledge. GenAI tools for scientific research | Kamil Filipek, PhD (Center for Artificial Intelligence and Computer Modeling, UMCS)

Generative artificial intelligence is a powerful set of tools that can be used in scientific research by both researchers and students. There is a wide range of GenAI-based solutions available on the market, and identifying which ones are valuable and which are not can sometimes be a very complex process. The aim of this presentation is to introduce the topic of GenAI and to showcase selected tools that support broadly understood scientific research.

Dr Kamil Filipek:
Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Computer Modeling at UMCS. Data scientist, sociologist. Postdoctoral fellowship at the Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling at the University of Warsaw. R and Python enthusiasts. Specializes in deep learning (tensorflow) in the area of natural language processing (NLP).
